Applying to a job in 2024 can feel like being a tribute in the Hunger Games:

“May the odds be ever in your favor”

Hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants are applying to jobs within hours of being posted, so how can you stand out in the crowd of qualified candidates?

Tailor your resume to the job listing
It’s tempting to send the same resume to every job you apply to, but for maximum visibility you want to take keywords of the job listing and insert those keywords into your resume where appropriate. You want to align your resume to the needs of the role and show how your skills will set you up for success.

Make your resume AI-readable
In 2024, it’s a fair assumption that some version of AI or a bot will be taking a first pass at all resumes to weed out candidates. That means your resume needs to be scannable and digitally readable. While curated layouts are fine, you want to make sure it’s not overly designed making it harder for AI to read.

Create a customized cover letter
Cover letters might seem like the worst part of the job application, but it also might be the most important. This is where you come in short and succinct to share your WHY. Why are you the best candidate for this role? Do it in a way that shows your personality and your experience so you’re giving them a preview of who you are!

Don’t be afraid to follow up
Applying isn’t a set it and forget it process, it might take a second touch to get to the next steps of the interview process. Try your best to find the contact information for the hiring manager of the role you’re interested in and follow up via email a few days after you apply.
