What’s wonderful about working for WunderLand?
Working in the interesting and hot space of digital, marketing and creative – we’re often at the cutting edge of trends so getting a bird’s eye view into what organizations are doing in this space is fascinating. And doing that with a team of committed subject matter experts who really care – care about understanding our clients and their needs. Same is true on the talent side – ensuring we understand what are candidates are looking for both short and long-term and matching them with the right opportunities. Having a team of WunderLanders who have that mix of technical and market knowledge who really care and maintain relationships throughout people’s careers is what sets WunderLand apart from the competition.
What do you enjoy about recruiting?
People are fascinating! Everyone is different; people have different priorities so there’s no one-size-fits-all. I love getting to know people – really get to know them. What they care about, where they’ve been and what they’ve done. Our jobs consume so much of our time, and they typically provide the livelihood for ourselves and our families so this is important stuff. To be that trusted partner and to help navigate the job search process for people is hugely rewarding (and fun!).
What advice do you have for a company that is looking to hire?
Anyone who has ever made a “bad” hire knows firsthand how important it is to get it right the first time. While it’s impossible to 100% avoid the occasional unfortunate hire, any company should be looking for a trusted partner in the recruiting process.
As an organization, you should be thoughtful and protective of the recruitment partners you select – we’re an extension of you, your team and your company. You should be looking for people that are smart, polished, thoughtful and relationship driven in their approach. If people are all about “the deal” or have an aggressive style and approach, know that’s how they’re treating candidates as well – with your company’s name attached! In today’s world, everyone is a consumer, so regardless of whether someone is a fit or gets the role, each person should be treated with respect and care.
Additionally, you’re looking for a firm that takes the time to understand you and your organization – all the things you can’t read on a job description or a company website. The right partner will understand these nuances and then send you a select number of applicants that have been fully vetted to meet both the hard and soft skills for the role. Question the quality of a firm that sends you ten resumes in ten minutes and leaves the work of figuring out who is a fit. That's what you should be paying a recruitment firm to assist with – your time is valuable! Even if it takes an extra day or two to get the right people, it’s worth the wait.
What advice do you have for anyone who is looking for a new job?
Look within first and do some real soul searching. Figure out what you’re good at (and be honest with yourself) and what do you want to do. Think about those 2-3 things that are most important to you. Is it location, vertical industry, company culture? Once you narrow this down, find organizations that meet these criteria.
Then think about the role. Just because you think you’d like a certain type of role doesn’t mean you’re qualified to do it so be targeted in what you apply for.
Take this thoughtful approach into the interview process as well. If you’re fortunate enough to get an interview, do your homework! Understand what the organization does, what their key strategies are – all of this is readily available via the company website (annual report, press releases, careers section). Look up the people you’ll be interviewing with on LinkedIn, show up on time, be polished in your presentation and write a thoughtful thank you note. Do all that, and you’ll be a step ahead of most of your competition!

Why should a client want to work with WunderLand?
WunderLand is positioned in the market to go deep within the digital, marketing and creative functions. We don’t claim to be all things to all people, but if you’re looking for digital, marketing or creative – we can definitely help. Because we’ve focused on these niche areas, we’ve built up deep talent pipelines of both active and passive candidates. Our teams of recruiters are out talking to this talent every day, and many of our candidates come to us via referrals, so we have access to talent that companies’ Talent Acquisition or HR teams often don’t. These people aren’t on LinkedIn or job boards – and don’t apply to job postings.
WunderLand also takes the time to screen every candidate so that we’re only sending the cream of the crop. For every 10 candidates we screen, we’re typically only presenting 1-2 of those to our clients. We’re saving you and your organization valuable time by taking care of the heavy lifting and helping to ensure that you’re hiring quality talent.
Not only that, but the approach anyone at WunderLand has is all about the long-term relationship. We’re never going to leave you hanging – even if the role is difficult or there’s an eleventh hour issue. We want to invest in the digital, marketing and creative community because we believe it’s the right thing to do, but also because we know that once people work with WunderLand they’ll see the difference.
We have many clients that we’ve worked with for years – sometimes placing entire teams over the years. WunderLand understands those teams and organizations inside out which allows us to be even more targeted in who we send. Clients don’t have to explain to culture, etc. to us – we already know it. These are the types of relationships that are most successful for both parties – our clients and ourselves. We’re already working with a number of top organizations – both big and small – but we’re always looking to grow the WunderLand family!

Lastly, any quotes, mantras or inspiration for our readers?
An early boss once had a saying….”leave the ship in better shape than when you arrived”. It’s a really simple tenant that’s stuck with me and one that applies to everyone at every level. We’re all hired to do jobs, and if you actively work to leave the role/organization in a better place, you’ll have left your mark (and likely helped grow your career).
